How to Get Rid of Dandruff: Causes and Home Remedies

Dandruff is a common skin condition affecting the scalp and causes flaking and itchy skin. Dandruff is not a contagious or a serious condition but it can be quite embarrassing and difficult to control when it becomes excessive and starts creating other problems as well. It is not related to a person’s poor hygiene but it is more visible if one does not brush their hair or wash it often. One is more susceptible to dandruff during the cold and dry seasons.

Trying to get rid of dandruff completely requires work and care, so, let us see some of the causes and home remedies to treat and get rid of dandruff.

Before learning about how to treat and get rid of dandruff, here are some reasons which may cause dandruff in the first place.

  • Dry or oily and irritated skin.
  •  Allergic reaction due to hair and skin products.
  •  Diet 
  •  Not brushing your hair regularly.
  •  Not washing or shampooing hair enough.
  •  Yeast-like fungus (Malassezia) which feeds on the oil of the scalp causes dandruff and itchy scalp. 
  •  Skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Treatment and Home Remedies for Dandruff:

Dandruff can be a chronic condition and hence can be managed with proper care and treatment. Here are some tips and remedies to naturally get rid of dandruff.

1. Control and Manage Stress

Stress is one of the reasons which not only affect your overall health but also makes you susceptible to many conditions and diseases. Although stress can not directly cause skin disorders it can definitely worsen or trigger the existing problems. Stress can trigger dandruff, hence managing stress can help reduce dandruff and its symptoms. 

2. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is known to be used to treat various conditions like acne, dermatitis, etc. The anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties in tea tree oil can be helpful to reduce the symptoms of dandruff. Tea tree oil can be effective in fighting the fungus which causes dermatitis and dandruff.

But, tea tree oil applied directly on the scalp can cause irritation, inflammation, or rashes especially to those with sensitive skin. So, I would recommend that if you are using tea tree oil then add a few drops in your regular shampoo or use shampoos containing tea tree oil in them. 

3. Frequent hair washing

Infrequent hair washing or not washing hair for several days can result in the accumulation of oil and dead skin cells on your scalp. Hence, washing your hair daily or a few times a week can help prevent dandruff especially if you have oily scalp and hair.

4. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is a succulent plant that is used for many skin problems and its healing properties. It can help in preventing dandruff due to its antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-fungal properties. Aloe vera helps reduce inflammation of the skin which helps in reducing the itchiness caused due to dandruff.

You can use aloe vera gel directly extracted from the leaves of the plant which is much more preferable or you can also use a store brought gel. Massage the aloe vera on your scalp before shampooing, the cooling effects of aloe vera will also help in soothing the itchiness. 

5. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the best ingredients when it comes to any kind of hair problem. Coconut oil which is also well known for its health benefits is also used as a natural remedy for dandruff. It helps in improving hydration, reduce irritation, and also prevent any fungal growth on the scalp.

Apply coconut oil on the scalp and massage it for a few minutes before washing your hair or you can also use a shampoo that contains coconut oil in them.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is helpful for many health benefits, but it is also one of the remedies to get rid of dandruff. The acidity of the vinegar in the apple cider vinegar helps to stimulate the shedding of the dead skin cells from the scalp which can prevent dandruff as well as an itchy scalp.

It also helps to balance the natural pH of the skin which further helps to reduce any growth of fungus. To use apple cider vinegar, do not use it directly on the scalp, instead add few drops in your shampoo and then wash your hair.

7. Lemon

Lemon which contains vitamin C can help with many hair problems and help in getting strong and healthy hair. Vitamin C helps in strengthening the hair follicles and helps get rid of dandruff and itchy scalp. The acidity in lemons also helps to balance the pH of the skin and helps to prevent dandruff.

Take a limited quantity of lemon juice rubbing it on your scalp with your fingers for a couple of minutes. Then, mix one cup of water with a few drops of lemon juice and rinse your hair with it. Wash hair with a mild shampoo after. You can repeat this daily till dandruff disappears. 

8. Baking Soda

Baking soda is easily available in most of our kitchens. Baking soda is said to help reduce dandruff. The anti-fungal properties in baking soda help in the treatment of dandruff. It also acts as an exfoliant which helps in getting rid of the dead skin cells from the scalp and also reduces itchiness.

Although, it is recommended to not use too much baking soda as it can strip off the natural oils and cause dryness and irritation. You can massage the baking soda directly on wet hair and then wash it off after a few minutes of skipping the shampoo. Using baking soda may dry out your hair at the beginning but after a few uses, the scalp will start producing natural oils eventually.

9. Do not Scratch

I know it is difficult to try not to scratch your scalp since the main symptom of dandruff is itchiness. But, scratching too much can cause inflammation and irritation. Especially if you have long nails, scratching can lead to wounds which further leads to infections. 

10. Dietary changes

Not having proper food can also cause effects on the body. While food is not the direct cause of dandruff, but a poor diet can make the symptoms worse. Food rich with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants may help in reducing the inflammation of the skin.

Eating food with high carbs can result in the accumulation of glycogen in the skin, which the yeast feeds on. So, it is recommended to reduce the intake of carbs and sugar if you are more prone to dandruff.
