5 Ways to Get Rid of Blackheads: Causes and Remedies

Blackheads are small, dark lesions that are caused due to clogged hair follicles on the face and neck. They appear dark or black in color hence it derives its name blackheads. Blackheads are common forms of acne. Oily skin types are most vulnerable to blackheads but any skin type can get blackheads, it all depends on how you take care of your skin. Blackheads are formed when the pores on our skin are filled up with dead skin cells and excess sebum is produced.

Blackheads have open surfaces compared to whiteheads which create closed pores and hence blackheads are dark and black in color since the oxygen creates oxidation. Blackheads are mostly seen on the face but can also appear on other body parts like back, neck, arms, shoulders, and chest since there are hair follicles present in these areas.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads:

Before finding out how to get rid of blackheads, let us see why these blackheads are caused in the first place.

Causes of Blackheads:

Blackheads are formed when the opening of hair follicles in the skin is clogged with excess oil called sebum. A bump called comedo is formed when the dead skin cells and oils get gathered in the opening to skin follicles. When the skin over the bump is open and exposed to air it turns black and forms a blackhead whereas if the skin is closed it is called a whitehead.

Here are some of the reasons why blackheads are caused:

  • Age and hormonal changes in the body, most commonly during puberty when the sebum production is increased due to changes in hormone levels. 
  • Hormonal changes caused during menstruation, use of birth control pills, and pregnancy.
  • Overproduction of the skin cells in the body.
  • Blockage of pores due to the use of makeup and clothing. 
  • Excessive sweating or being in high humidity. 
  • Health conditions like stress, PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). 
  • Shaving or any other activities which open the hair follicles. 
  • Smoking or using steroid-based drugs. 

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Blackheads:

Now that we know what are blackheads and what are the causes of blackheads forming on the skin, here are some home methods you can try to get rid of blackheads.

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is a natural exfoliator with antiseptic, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. It helps to balance the pH levels of the skin and also helps produce less oil. It also helps in exfoliating and getting rid of the dead skin cells and excess sebum.

How to Use:

Take a tablespoon of baking soda and two tablespoon water in a bowl and mix it together to form a well combined smooth paste. Apply this paste on the blackheads and areas affected with the blackheads and allow it to dry for about 10-20 minutes. Once the applied paste is dried, rinse it off with lukewarm water. You can use this method regularly to get the best results.

2. Cinnamon powder

Cinnamon is a great ingredient to use for treating blackheads. It helps remove the dead skin cells as well as moisturize the skin also. The anti-bacterial properties of cinnamon help to get rid of blackheads.

How to Use:

Take one tablespoon of cinnamon powder, one teaspoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of turmeric powder. Mix these three ingredients all together until it combines and apply the mixture on the skin. Leave it on for about 12-15 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water or wipe it off with a damp cloth or flannel.

3. Lemon

Lemon is one of the best natural ingredients to use for the skin. Lemon juice is very helpful for treating dark circles, removing bacteria, and dead skin cells. This helps to get rid of blackheads. The nutrients and vitamins present in lemon is also very useful in making your skin smooth and glow. The astringent quality of lemon will help in getting rid of the dead skin and excess oil.

How to Use:

Firstly wash your face with a gentle cleanser. Take one teaspoon of lemon juice in a bowl. Apply the lemon juice on the blackheads with the help of a cotton ball and let it sit till it dries for about 10 minutes. Once it dries, you can rinse it off with cool water.

4. Egg whites

Egg whites are known for their skin tightening abilities which also helps in the removal of blackheads. Egg whites applied on the skin directly causes the pores of the skin to shrink in size and hence help to force the blackheads out. The nutrients present in the egg whites also help to improve the skin texture and get rid of excess oil from the skin and keep the skin healthy.

How to Use:

Take an egg and break it, separating the white from the yolk. Take the egg white and whisk it up. Apply this to the blackheads and leave it on for about 15-20 minutes. Then, wash it off with cold water.

5. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are full of vitamin C and vitamin A. It has oil-absorbing, skin brightening, and pore shrinking properties which is great especially for those with oily skin type. Tomato pulp helps to get rid of the excess oil and grease from the skin. It also has antiseptic properties that help in unclogging the pores. This helps to get rid of blackheads and also makes the skin soft and glowing.

How to Use:

Cut a few slices of tomato and rub the slice of tomato on the blackheads area. You can also mash the tomato and apply its juice on the blackheads and wash it off once it dries, or you can also leave it overnight and wash it off in the morning.
